Setting up AIM Accounts using a Windows Computer
Creating your AIM account:
- Go to the AIM Registration Website
- Fill in the requested information for an IM account.
- It may take several tries to get a unique screen name, you might try adding a few numbers to the end of your login or a combination of names.
- You do not need to add anything to your profile, just create an account.
- Your account should now be ready to use once you get the screen that states “You have a screen name”
Getting AIM for your computer:
- Go to http://www.aim.com
- This webpage should recognize your computer's operating system so choose the "Install Now" button.
- When asked, save the file to disk.
- Check your desktop or download folder for the Install_AIM.exe file.
- Open this file.
- Do not choose anything on the "Also Intall:" option.
- Install the software.
Setting up the computer
- Be sure you are plugged into a network or connected via wireless.
- If you have a webcamera or microphone be sure they are connected and functioning.
Using the AIM software
- Launch AIM and log in using your AIM username and
password.
- You need to add other accounts into your buddy lists of the users
to have conversations with them.
- To add someone to your buddy list, from the “Edit” menu,
select “Add Buddy” or from you “Buddy List” window,
select the + button at the bottom.
- From the window that opens you can assign a nickname to the person, add their "Screen Name" and assign them to a group, if you want.
- Once the account info is entered, select the “Save” button
at the bottom of the window. The person you just entered should
now appear in your buddy list.
- If the name of your Buddy is dark then they are online, if not then they are not online.
- To send text messages, double-click the name of the person in the Buddy
list and
type a welcome message and press enter. The person will need to
click accept to text message back to you.
- To invite someone to video chat right-click on the name of the person in the Buddy list and choose Video.
