4 Courses for ESL Strand (plus practicum EDCI 5580 01)

LANG 4750 (3 units). Introduction to Linguistics. This courses provides an introduction to the fundamentals of linguistic study, including phonology, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, and syntax. There is a focus on the application of linguistic theory. Prerequisite: 8 hours of foreign language instruction. Cross Listed with English and Anthropology.

LANG 4770 (3 units). Sociolinguistics. This course extends the fundamentals of linguistic study by examining the relationship and interactions among language, society, and culture including linguistic and social behaviors with regard to the creation and modification of cultural identity. Prerequisite: 8 hours of foreign language instruction.

EDCI 4350 (3 units). Introduction to Second Language Acquisition. This course is designed to address the theoretical foundations and practical applications of working with second language learners. The course will focus on both historical and contemporary theories of second language acquisition. It will then focus on the classroom applications of this theoretical base to interactions with English language learners, curriculum, instruction, assessment and evaluation, classroom organization, and school-community relations. School-based program models that focus on strengthening primary language proficiency, English language proficiency (English as a Second Language) and content and Language acquisition (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) will be reviewed.

ENGL 5030 (4 units). English as a Second Language: Theory and Methods. This course explores the theoretical and practical issues, concerns, and problems associated teaching English as a Second Language. It includes discussion of the both historical and contemporary theory of teaching English as a Second Language as well as historical and contemporary approaches (Total Physical Response, Direct Approach, Natural Approach, etc.) to teaching English as a Second Language. Prerequisite: LANG 4750; LANG 4770; EDCI 4350.

EDCI 5580 (2 units). Supervised Internship in English as a Second Language Education. This course requires students to work directly with second language learners in some classroom or school based setting for at least two hours during the school day. Supervision will consist of some on-site visitations, on-site supervisions by ESL certified faculty, and/or electronic distance delivery mechanisms. May be taken concurrently with Practicum in Student Teaching for the Teacher Credential.
