2004 ROBERTS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

As part of IREX's continuing expansion into the Middle East and North
Africa (MENA), IREX is pleased to announce the 2004 John J. and Nancy
Lee Roberts Fellowship Program. This year's program will support
cutting-edge research on primary, secondary, and/or higher education in
the MENA region.

IREX began its expansion into the MENA region in early 2001 when it
joined the Middle Eastern Studies Association and began pilot projects
in Iran and Turkey. IREX specializes in international education,
independent media, Internet development, and civil society programs.
IREX education programs give academics, teachers, students,
administrators, policy makers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals in
the United States and overseas the resources and opportunities they need
to conduct innovative research; increase their professional knowledge
and abilities; and advance their leadership skills.

The 2004 Roberts Fellowship program will provide a single grant for up
to 12 months in length. IREX encourages collaborative research programs
involving international colleagues.

Eligible Research Fields: Primary, Secondary, and/or Higher Education
Eligible Countries of Research Focus: Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and
Saudi Arabia (Applications will also be considered on Afghanistan and
Pakistan)

Application deadline: April 1, 2004

All applicants will be notified of their status in June 2004. The
fellowship may begin as early as July 2004.

Eligibility: The principal investigator must be a US citizen or
permanent resident. A PhD or equivalent terminal degree is required.
Studies involving more than one country and collaborative research
programs involving international colleagues are strongly encouraged.

Maximum Award: Applicants may request up to $30,000.

Eligible Expenses: Travel and associated expenses; stipends; honoraria;
materials; meeting and conference expenses; and publication expenses.
Limited equipment may also be authorized if needed to conduct research.
