Jonathan Kozol

Kozol makes a point during his Oct. 10 talk in the College of Education Auditorium.

Award-winning author Jonathan Kozo delivered the 2008 John P. "Jack" Ellbogen Symposium for Teaching and Learning address to a near-capacity Education Auditorium filled with teachers, teachers-in-training, college faculty, UW dignitaries and community on Oct. 10.

Funding from the John P. "Jack" Ellbogen Foundation suported Kozol's appearance.

Kozol reflected on his decades of teaching and advocacy on behalf of poor children. He also shared stories from his most recent book, Letters to a Young Teacher, which discusses a number of the controversial issues that the author has addressed in recent years, including high-stakes testing, corporate involvement in public schools, and re-segregation of urban schools.

Kozol signed copies of Letter to a Young Teacher during a post-talk reception held in his honor.

Book group follow-up discussions will be hosted throughout Wyoming during the 2008-09 academic year.
