The opportunity to reconnect to his teaching roots was one primary motivation drawing UW educational studies professor Francisco Rios to collaborate on a new book targeting students in career and technical college programs.
The book, Communicating in the Workplace, "designed to develop communication skills to ensure success on the job," includes case studies, communication skills exercises, and self-assessment activities. Rios' co-authors are Thomas Cheesbro and Linda O'Connor.
Among the topics covered in the updated text are: communication concepts, perception, cultural diversity, listening responsibly, interpersonal relationship skills, conflict resolution, and teamwork.
"This book is ‘branching back' toward my early days as a teacher at a technical school," Rios says, recalling his 13 years working in that environment. "We had originally put together some handouts we had created and couldn't find anywhere else. From that, it involved into a small (self-published) workbook, and then to a short black and white book."
Publisher Prentice Hall asked the team to expand the work and create a four-color resource that could be used widely by community and technical colleges.
Collaborating on this book revision helped Rios to return to the teaching that "originally brought me into the profession." It also allowed him the opportunity to continue his collaboration with O'Connor and Cheesebro, whom he calls mentor.
